Leviticus 19:32
32 "`Rise in the presence of the aged, show respect for the
elderly and revere your God. I am the LORD.
Deuteronomy 24:17-18
17 Do not deprive the alien or the
fatherless of justice, or take the cloak of the widow as a
pledge. 18 Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and the LORD
your God redeemed you from there. That is why I command you to do
this.
Proverbs 23:22
22 Listen to your father,
who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is
old.
Isaiah 35:3-4
3 Strengthen the feeble
hands, steady the knees that give way; 4 say to those with
fearful hearts, "Be strong, do not fear; your God will come,
he will come with vengeance; with divine retribution he will come
to save you."
Jeremiah 22:3-5
3 This is what the LORD
says: Do what is just and right. Rescue from the hand of his
oppressor the one who has been robbed. Do no wrong or violence to
the alien, the fatherless or the widow, and do not shed innocent
blood in this place. 4 For if you are careful to carry out these
commands, then kings who sit on David's throne will come through
the gates of this palace, riding in chariots and on horses,
accompanied by their officials nd their people. 5 But if you do
not obey these commands, declares the LORD, I swear by myself
that this palace will become a ruin.'"
Matthew 25:37-40
37 "Then the righteous
will answer him, `Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you,
or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see
you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe
you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit
you?' 40 "The King will reply, `I tell you the truth,
whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine,
you did for me.'
Luke 6:32-34,36
32 "If you love those
who love you, what credit is that to you? Even `sinners' love
those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who are good
to you, what credit is that to you? Even `sinners' do that. 34
And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what
credit is that to you? Even `sinners' lend to `sinners',
expecting to be repaid in full. 36 Be merciful, just as your
Father is merciful.
Acts 6:1,3
1. In those days when the
number of disciples was increasing, the Grecian Jews among them
complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were
being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. 3 Brothers,
choose seven men from among
you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will
turn this responsibility over to them
1 Corinthians 12:21-27
21 The eye cannot say to
the hand, "I don't need you!" And the head cannot say
to the feet, "I don't need you!" 22 On the contrary,
those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable,
23 and the parts that we think are less honourable we treat with
special honour. And the parts that are unpresentable are treated
with special modesty, 24 while our presentable parts need no
special treatment. But God has combined the members of the body
and has given greater honour to the parts that lacked it, 25 so
that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts
should have equal concern for each other. 26 If one part suffers,
every part suffers with it; if one part is honoured, every part
rejoices with it. 27. Now you are the body of Christ, and each
one of you is a part of it.
Ephesians 6:1-3
1. Children, obey your
parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 "Honour your
father and mother" --which is the first commandment with a
promise-- 3 "that it may go well with you and that you may
enjoy long life on the earth."
1 Timothy 5:16
16 If any woman who is a believer
has widows in her family, she should help them and not let the
church be burdened with them, so that the church can help those
widows who are really in need.
James 1:26 - 2:1-5,8-9
26 If anyone considers himself
religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he
deceives himself and his religion is worthless. 27 Religion that
God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look
after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself
from being polluted by the world. 1. My brothers, as believers in
our glorious Lord Jesus Christ, don't show favoritism. 2 Suppose
a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine
clothes, and a poor man in shabby clothes also comes in. 3 If you
show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say,
"Here's a good seat for you," but say to the poor man,
"You stand there" or "Sit on the floor by my
feet," 4 have you not discriminated among yourselves and
become judges with evil thoughts? 5 Listen, my dear brothers: Has
not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be
rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who
love him? 8. If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture,
"Love your neighbor as yourself," you are doing right.
9 But if you show favoritism, you sin and are convicted by the
law as law-breakers.
